Recommended every 6 months. Deworming: "Anthelmintics"- products used to kill and remove internal parasites. Horses are subject to many internal parasites and constant maintenance is needed. Large and small stongyles are the most common intestinal parasites. Horses should be dewormed with an appropriate product on a 4-8 weeks basis. Ivermectin (Eqvalan, Zimectrin) is a good broad spectrum choice. Little resistance to this product has occurred and it is 90-99% effective against the common parasites. It also eliminates the larvae of Habronema that can cause skin, third eye lid and penile lesions, as well as stomach bots. Fenbendazole (Panacur) should be done in the spring to eliminate encysted small strongyles (cyathastomes). The dewormer is given at double the normal dose for 5 days, commonly known as the Power Pack. Today’s monthly paste dewormers are very effective, but daily dewormers (Stongid C) is useful for horses kept in crowded conditions or those that have had trouble with heavy parasite burdens in the past. These horses should receive ivermectin every 4 months in addition to the daily dewormer. Recommend 2 month rotation.
